“The Sooner you skip the Sooner you’ll smile!” -Oklahoma Head Skipper Dave May

“Skipping in Oklahoma is OK.” says Sooner State Skipper, Dave May.

That simple statement is the driving force behind a statewide skipping movement being orchestrated by Dave. He is quick to point out the many benefits of skipping, benefits Dave says many Oklahoman’s desperately need. “It’s almost impossible to skip and frown at the same time. Skipping raises your heart rate, burns calories, builds muscle, improves physical coordination, forces you to overcome fear of what other people might think, reconnects you with the joy of childhood, makes you and most people who see you smile, and it’s absolutely free! Skipping makes you healthier and happier at the same time, that’s why I want my fellow Oklahomans to discover the joy of skipping.”

Dave has already enlisted the support of Oklahoma State Senator David Myers, who will officially be proclaiming Dave May the "Skipping Ambassador of Oklahoma!"

Dave is no stranger to rallying the public for good causes. Last year he helped raise a million dollars to build a new Youth Shelter and Family Service Center for the families of North Central Oklahoma. More than $100,000 of the money was raised through public pledges in a Dave May Weight Loss Campaign. From May 1, 2002 to May 1, 2003 Dave lost 111 pounds. “The weight loss has really changed my life. I no longer have high cholesterol, high blood sugar, or high blood pressure. Now I’m faced with an even greater challenge, keeping the weight off and staying fit for the rest of my life.” added Dave.

Along with his duties as the top skipper in Oklahoma, Dave also operates a youth mentoring program he helped design. The program is ARMS of Kay County. ARMS stands for Adult Role Models. ARMS serves children from age 5 to 17 by matching them with qualified adult volunteer mentors. Dave also works in schools, libraries and churches in Oklahoma and Kansas using the arts of magic and ventriloquism to teach children valuable life skill messages. He hopes to use skipping in all of these areas to help promote physical fitness and self esteem. “I believe skipping is the activity that best symbolizes and promotes the values I hold dear.” Dave continues, “Skipping is something the young and old can share. It breaks down walls and brings people together with a smile. There’s no competition in skipping, no right or wrong way to skip. It’s hard to take yourself too seriously when you skip.”
